Make Family Movie Night Fun – 5 Ideas

Looking for some inspiring ways to make family movie night fun and extra special? Below you will find ideas for enjoying movie night with your family without leaving your home! Here are some of our favourite ways to make family movie night fun:


1. Make Popcorn

According to my kids, making popcorn is pretty much a mandatory requirement for movie night. To make popcorn extra special, try serving it up in these adorable popcorn bags! Even better, hit up your local dollar store and get some plastic or glass popcorn cups that you can wash and reuse. You'll have no waste, guilt and be saving the environment at the same time! 

2. Make a Sign

A sheet of paper or a chalkboard announcing what is “Now Showing” and at what time is a great finishing touch!

3. Pretend Ticket Booth

A small table set up with paper tickets, play money, and a calculator or play cash register is all you need. Added bonus — Sneak in a little learning about counting money or giving proper change! You can get most, if not all of these items at your local dollar store. 

4. Invite Friends

For a more authentic movie-going experience, why not invite a few friends over to join in the fun? Have each guest bring their favourite blanket, pillow, or stuffed animal friend.

5. Select a Family Friendly Movie

Choose a movie the entire family will enjoy, or take turns selecting the flick so everyone has a chance to pick a favourite to watch together.

Spy Kids – Family Movie Marathon


Note: You don't have to pick Spy kids, this is just an idea to show you what you can do and how much fun it can be for any movie marathon. 

We thought it would be fun to have a family movie marathon featuring the Spy Kids movies and some stealthy spy crafts to go along with it! The kids thought these spy kits were so much fun to make! Since the Spy Kids movies are streaming on NETFLIX, it was easy to plan our family movie marathon without having to leave our own living room! A special thanks to NETFLIX for sponsoring today’s creative family movie marathon theme!

If you don’t already have a NETFLIX subscription, I highly recommend it as a great alternative to cable for movies and television shows that can be streamed to your home instantly and without advertisements. Thanks to the NETFLIX app, you can even stream movies or tv shows directly to your mobile device! And there are no commitments, so you can go month-to-month. You can also get Amazon Prime or Crave. They are also great online movie streaming sources. 



Spy Kids Family Movie Marathon What to Watch Together:

Spy Kids (Rated PG)
The tables are turned when pint-sized kids Carmen and Juni must rescue their secret-agent parents from the diabolical clutches of Alexander Minion.
Spy kids Carmen and and Juni Cortez team up with two other pint-size secret agents, Gary and Gerti Giggles, in order to take on an evil scientist.
Spy Kids 3: Game Over  (Rated PG)
Carmen gets caught in a virtual reality game designed by the kids’ new nemesis, the Toymaker, and it’s up to Juni to save her by beating the game.
Former Spy Kids Carmen and Juni return to help twin siblings Rebecca and Cecil Wilson save the world with their retired secret-agent stepmother.

What to Make Together:



Most of the components for this Pretend Spy Kit can be found at your local dollar store or you may already have them at home!
To make your own, gather up some secret spy type things like:
  • flashlight
  • cell phone case
  • watch
  • sunglasses
  • iPlay
  • anything else that is stealthy or cool looking!
We used a pencil box we already had on-hand to hold all of our spy kit items together.

You'll need to download and print on heavy stock paper these templates for the laptop screen and keypad.

For a fun time, create a disguise kit for pretend stuffed animal “spies”! You’ll want to change their appearance so their true identities will never be discovered, otherwise, their top-secret missions could be compromised. *gasp*

This Top Secret Writing Center was a huge hit with my kids (ages 6 and 10)! They spent an entire afternoon coding, writing, and trading secret messages back and forth.


This nature activity is a great way to keep the kids engaged in outdoor play, and you may be able to do this right in your own backyard! My kids loved pretending to be “leaf detectives” to explore which leaves come from which trees. Great imaginative learning fun!


As I said before, you can do this with any movies you like to make them more fun. Just be creative, check Pintrest for some ideas.
