Claresholm highway suicide urban legend
Claresholm Alberta is a small town of over 3000 people off highway 2 between Lethbridge and Calgary. It's a nice town where everyone knows everyone and are all kind, friendly and helpful to one another. There's not a lot of crime in this small community. Until, December 15, 2011.
It all started the night of December 14, 2011, when Tabitha Stepple age 21, her ex-boyfriend Derek Jensen age 21, and her two friends who were baseball players for Lethbridge Bulls baseball team Mitch MacLean age 20 and Tanner Craswell age 22 were all celebrating Tanner's 22nd Birthday at a Blarney stone pub.
Derek and Tabitha had been dating and living together for a while before they broke up. They had still been living together when the incident took place. There had not been any prior violence between Derek and Tabitha before the night of December 15th, although tensions had been mounting.
Derek was jealous and enraged to see Tabitha with other men although they were all just friends. Derek had confronted Tabitha, pushing her out of her chair. Mitch and Tanner had plans to get a 5 am. flight out of Calgary to Prince Edward Island, their home town where they were going for the Christmas holidays. Tabitha had offered to drive them to the airport in her SUV.
Tabitha, Tanner, Mitch and their friend Shayana Conway age 21 were also with them for the road trip. They headed North towards Calgary on highway 2. Derek was also driving north on Highway 2 towards Calgary as he was told that Tabitha was going on a "road trip" with these two guys and another girl. Derek drove a green Pontiac Sunfire. He was speeding down the highway in search of Tabitha. He was texting Tabitha and calling her non-stop since the fight at the pub. Sending her nasty texts and leaving crude messages. One text he had left her said, "This night's not going to end well for you. I hope you know that."
Derek managed to catch up to Tabitha and her friends at the 7 eleven in Claresholm The four of them had stopped briefly at 3 am. They were unaware that Derek had already arrived there or was even following them. He didn't confront them at this time. The group left 7 eleven around 3:30 am, headed North on highway 2 towards Calgary when Derek had caught back up with them and rammed them from behind with his Sunfire. They were just North of Claresholm about 130 km from the South of Calgary. Shayna Conway was driving the SUV with her friends Mitch, Tabitha, and Tanner inside. Shayna got out of the SUV after Derek rammed it, to confront the driver (she didn't know who it was at the time) then Derek jumped out of his Sunfire, pointed a 9mm handgun at her and shot her 3 times.
Derek rushed to the SUV where Tabitha, Mitch, and Tanner sat terrified and fired several rounds into the SUV, striking and killing Tabitha and Tanner. Mitch was also shot but managed to escape the SUV. That's when Derek turned the gun on himself and took his own life.
The body of Mitch MacLean was found in the ditch on the East of the highway He was rushed to the Claresholm hospital then airlifted to Foothills Medical Center in Calgary but passed away during the transfer to Calgary. Shayna had been shot 3 times but managed to crawl to a cellphone, calling 911. She was also airlifted to the Foothills Medical Center in Calgary where she underwent surgery. Despite her injuries, she survived, making a full recovery.
Derek had three weapons in his Sunfire, all registered. Officers also seized another firearm and additional ammunition from Derek's home in Lethbridge.
People of Claresholm were shocked when they'd heard about this murder/suicide just outside their small town. Things like this don't happen in or just outside Claresholm. It was unnerving for the locals.
Some of the locals have said that the ghosts of Tabith, Mitch, Tanner, and Shayna can still be seen and heard on highway 2. It's said that if you stop at the first sign out of Claresholm that says Calgary 130km, you can hear gunshots, crying and screaming of young women and young men.
Some have said that they've seen a ghostly figure of a young woman trying to flag down highway drivers for help. The ghostly figure has blood on her chest. When the passers-by get close and slow down, she disappears.
A few have even said that they've seen ghostly figures of young men walking the side of the highway into the nearby field as if they're lost or confused. When passersby stop to ask if they need help, they disappear without a trace into the field.
