Last Christmas ... Why is it so sad??

I just finished watching Last Christmas, in the comfort of my home, snuggled in my bed. I wasn't sure if I would like it. It takes a lot for me to like romance movies or rom com's. I think there are 3 I really enjoy; 1) Pretty woman, 2) Untamed Heart and 3) The fault in our stars.
I did enjoy Last Christmas... for the most part.

I found it humorous, I liked Emily and Henry's chemistry a lot and I really enjoyed "Santa" and Kate's mom. I thought the cast was well chosen.

For a lot of the movie, I thought Kate was just a selfish, spoiled young woman who didn't have a care in the world or care how she treated others and for the most part, she really didn't. I mean, she didn't even care she left the shop door unlocked when she closed the one night and when she thought it was broken into. She didn't seem overly sorry about the whole ordeal. She really didn't seem overly sorry for anything she did, said or how she affected anyone in her life. It was a bit on the annoying side.

Then Tom comes along and I thought, oh great; he's gonna make her fall in love, he's gonna change her for the better and they'll live happily ever after.

NOPE!! BOY WAS I WAY OFF!!

Yes, Tom comes into her life and at first, you can see she's hesitant about him and doesn't do a whole lot of changes but, as time goes on you see very small changes in Kate, good changes.
When she was at the homeless shelter and was asked to serve the people tea and such, she could have said no way! She didn't, instead, she tried to serve them and kept going back afterward. She'd donate all the money she made singing outside of the shelter back to the shelter, which was really sweet. She helped coordinate the Christmas party for the shelter and made it wonderful; all without Tom asking her to do it or get involved in any way. She did it out of the kindness of her heart and because she really enjoyed the company of the people there.

I thought it was a bit strange when Tom would disappear for days at a time or when he wouldn't tell her much about himself and when he took her to his very small flat, it was spotless, not much of anything was in his apartment and if you really paid attention, you would notice there was NOTHING of personal touch in his flat. Not a photograph, not a book, notepad, not even the sight of anyone ever cooking.
When she went back to his apartment to find him, my heart broke with Kate's when she put two and two together when the realtor told her a Webster someone died the year before... She played the part so perfectly you could feel her heart shatter in that moment of realization. This scene made me so angry and painfully sad for Kate. Tom should NOT have died. He should NOT have been the one to give her his heart. I was really rooting for them to be together and have their happily ever after. I did NOT see it coming that he was actually dead and she had his heart inside her.
It's like The fault in our stars; just when you're perfectly happy with this couple and ready to follow them on their happy journey, BAM!! Something tragic has to happen and the guy DIES!!! COME ON!! That's not a romance movie, that's a heartbreak movie. FUCK!! Give us some warning!!

Like Kate, I wondered why Tom told her she wouldn't be able to depend on him. Also like Kate, I thought maybe he was in a relationship already, married, on the run from the law... something, anything... NOT DEAD!!!
Why do these writers do that to their fans? Why do they make you fall in love with the characters just to watch them die?! Not cool!!

I am glad Kate kept going back to the shelter and was able to make amends with every person she'd wronged. That was really sweet of her and gave her some good karma; that she desperately needed.

This scene above was also very heartbreaking. She knew then that she'd fallen in love with a man she'd never fully have. Sure, she had HIS heart in her body and like he said, she was going to have it either way. You could see the heartache in her eyes, on her face and understand her pain.
She had promised him that she'd take care of his heart and she really did by continuing to do the good deeds he probably was doing before he'd died.

It's a really good movie. Like The fault in our stars, I think that it's a terrible, great movie. (Terrible because he dies and she never gets to have him and wonderful because she did have a part of him and will always have those moments with him to hold close to "THEIR" heart.
